Greek Gods
A Rape Culture Analysis
About
Reflection
Our research question was, "How, if at all, are myths relevant to contemporary day rape culture and society? How do these myths impact contemporary perspectives on the topic?" The venture to better understand and interpret these questions is the purpose of this website.
Rationale
The organization of the site was built upon the three Greek Gods: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. The theme of 3 was carried out throughout the site. Each webpage dedicated to a god contains three sections (Summary, Rape Culture, Modern Implications). Other pages including Exhibit, Collectors, and Sources were created as additional requirements for the site.
Challenges
Major challenges within the term of the project were tackled with various approaches. One of the largest tasks was narrowing down our topic and the breadth of research. Initially, all relationships were open to analysis, including father/son, male/female, rapist/rape victim. It was soon discovered that with the wide range of these relationships, only top-level analysis could be provided. Instead, honing in on one a specific societal statement was the path we chose as a group. Thus, a myth for each god was chosen, centralizing on what is now identified as rape. Our thesis addresses the modern implications of rape culture which build upon these myths.
Why Wix?
For our project, we chose to use Wix.com as our major platfrom for our site. As stated in my blog (A Byte Out of History), “Initially, Scalar was going to be the platform from which the website would be built. However, personalization, navigation, and other specificities were not quite as user friendly as was expected. Also, Javascript and CSS were unfamiliar programming languages to me, as they require more of a creative graphics background, versus purely computer science.”
Wix.com allowed for the use of appropriate data, with succint presentation styles and formats. From A Byte Out of History, “My aim is for the website to be intriguing, customized to fit the personalities of the three gods and to do them due diligence. I also hope for it to be a modern take on the ancient myths, bringing rape culture into a new, technologically advanced light.” While other web platforms such as Scalar are considered to be ‘legitimate’ platforms, within the scope of this class specifically and the depth / breadth of the research conducted, it was quite appropriate to use Wix.
A viable source is one that practical, usable, and achievable. Wix served all of these purposes without inundation on part of the maker. The information and collections on the site are no less valid because of the platform. And if the validity is brought into question in regards to the source of the site and how information was compiled, an About Us section is included within the homepage. If a researcher needs to find out who made the website and what credentials they have which makes their site viable, they have the ability attain that knowledge. Also, a Sources page is listed which links to various other sites which have historical and contemporary credence, including but not limited to, websites for a museum of art (ncartmuseum.org).
